1pm-3pm: Axis Syllabus with Daniel Bear Davis

Join us in Guelph for a weekend of Qigong and Axis Syllabus classes exploring the dynamic potential of the spiral. Morning Qigong classes will cultivate sensitivity to the transformation of forces - between receptive and propulsive, expansive and yielding, strength and softness. Afternoon Axis Syllabus classes will engage anatomical clues, seeking to collaborate with the body’s design to grow our physical possibilities while learning and respecting our structural limitations. These complimentary practices offer diverse insights into the intelligence of the spiral for restorative and dynamic applications.
All are welcome.

Super|Cute|aneous Fascia|nistas
Friday December 7th, 10-4 (with a lunch break)
With Daniel Bear Davis and Nuria Bowart

The sub-cutaneous fascia is a continuous sheet of connective tissue directly under the skin. What about the super-cutaneous fascia? What about the Super|Cute|aneous FasciaNistas?!

In this exploratory workshop we will use interaction with various qualities and arrangements of fabric to ask how the connective networks outside of our skin change our movement choices and possibilities. Taking exploration of fascia as our starting point, we will explode open the costume box, microscope into the embryological, and expand out into the environment to query how the qualities of what surrounds us change the way we move and live in our bodies. The class will combine solo work, partner work, and group work in a playful research laboratory.

Early Bird: Before November 28th: $75
After November 28th: $90

with Daniel Bear Davis and Sebastian Grubb
November 28 & 30, Weds & Friday, 10am - 1pm

In this workshop we will use the concept of “Docking Zones" to detail partnering options from beginning to advanced. The DZs are areas of the body that can be utilized to offer dynamic and versatile support in weight sharing scenarios to create a new “joint” with another body. We will use them to facilitate lifts and flight with reduced effort. How do we create a response-able system to deal with incoming force and transform it into possibility? How do we maintain integrity in the joints between humans to elongate a kinetic chain and conserve energy?

[Previous experience with the Axis Syllabus or experience with lifts is recommended for participation.]

Daniel and Sebastian are both certified Axis Syllabus Teachers with many years of experience in Contact Improvisation, bodywork, fitness training, and dance performance. This will be a fun, accessible, and at times athl...

Registration is Open!!!

Three Weeks of Intensive Study of the Axis Syllabus in the beautiful foothills of the Berkshires!

The Nomadic College(NC) provides a methodically designed curriculum and focused environment for the study and practice of the Axis Syllabus. The Axis Syllabus is a trans-disciplinary research and training platform concerned with the practice, study and teaching of bio-mechanics as they apply to a body in motion and the art of dancing. The NC provides an intensive context for movement artists, health professionals and researchers to replenish, investigate old and new patterns and to acquire skills for sustaining and inspiring their paths in the moving and healing arts.

I will be teaching Decide Bend during Week 2 and Super|Cute|Aneous Fascia|Nistas in Week 3!

Intro to Axis Syllabus for Dancers and Movers

taught by Daniel Bear Davis

The Axis Syllabus offers a groundswell of relevant and specific information into healthy movement habits for moving humans living in a dynamic world. In this dance workshop, we will look at details of our own anatomy, refined over thousands of years of evolution, to gain clues about how to move in collaboration with our own fascinating design. Through specific inquiry, observation, and practice, we seek to increase our kinetic capacities while reducing the risk of injury and repetitive strain. Through a combination of choreographed motifs and focused improvisations, we will build tools for dynamic alignment, resilience, and informed choice.

Classes are open to all levels. There will be a range of adaptations to proposed movement motifs so learning can be supported for beginners and seasoned dancers simultaneously. Collaboration with the underlying patterns of our design will benefit a...

Axis Syllabus: Universal Motor Principles.

These classes draw from the latest understandings in anatomy, biomechanics, physics, and other related disciplines to offer an integrated movement training that seeks collaboration with the structures of our body. Through specific inquiry, observation, and practice, the body is re-patterned to unleash reflexive kinetic potential while reducing the risk of injury and repetetive strain.

Classes are $10-$20 sliding scale.
